Salmonella outbreak that sickened 96 people linked to New Jersey produce company, FDA says

WOODLAND PARK, N.J. – Over 90 illnesses caused by salmonella have been linked to a New Jersey-based company, federal health officials said.

The potential source of the outbreak comes from Tailor Cut Produce of North Brunswick, the Federal Drug Administration announced Thursday. In December, the company recalled Fruit Luau cut fruit mix, cut honeydew, cantaloupe and pineapple products, which were distributed in Pennsylvania, New York, Delaware and New Jersey, the four states with the majority of the illnesses.

As of Dec. 30, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 96 illnesses in 11 states were confirmed by Whole Genome Sequencing and said "ill people from other states reported traveling to these states in the week before their illness started."

There have been 27 hospitalizations but no deaths reported.

According to a food safety alert by the CDC, the products were not sold directly to consumers in grocery stores and were "sold for use in institutional food service establishments such as hospitals, long-term care facilities, schools, and hotels."

Salmonella is a group of bacteria that can cause gastrointestinal illness and fever called salmonellosis, according to the FDA. One can develop symptoms 12 to 72 hours after infection that could include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. Salmonellosis could last four to seven days and people recover without treatment.

The FDA recommends rinsing items in clean running water without using cleaners or soaps followed by drying produce with a clean cloth towel or paper towel.

Delaware has the most reported illnesses with 39, Pennsylvania had 34 cases, New Jersey 12 and New York four.

The following states had one reported illness apiece: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Minnesota, Virginia and Washington.
