Our people: Pittsburgh native likes a good steak

Dec. 23—James Myers came to Clovis from Pittsburgh by way of Washington, to open one of the city's marijuana dispensaries, Score 420 on North Prince Street, where he is southern New Mexico district director for the statewide business.

He took some time out of his schedule Tuesday to tell The News about himself and the importance of the cut of beef known as a tomahawk steak.

Q: What brought you to Clovis?

A: I was brought here by the Score 420 partners to open the Clovis shop.

We were working in Spokane, Wash., when we decided to bring our expertise and knowledge into this new, emerging market.

We opened three weed stores in six months: Alamogordo, Hobbs and Clovis.

Q: Where were you born and where have you been?

A: I was born in Pittsburgh and lived there until I was 14.

That's when the family packed up and moved to Spokane.

I like both cities.

I have family in both places.

Q: Speaking of family, tell us about yours.

A: I have a brother and a sister. Ours is an average, happy family.

I have a dog, Mac. He's a 4-year-old Old English Bulldog.

He goes everywhere with me.

Q: What was your career before you got into the cannabis industry?

A: I've always been in a management role.

For six years I was a district manager for Subway restaurants.

I learned about routines and different operating procedures.

When I was young I always wanted to own my own business.

Q: What attracted you to the cannabis industry?

A: I had previously been a medical marijuana patient and I saw how it helped people.

I saw how it was going to be a new emerging market.

The biggest area I saw how it helped people was how it helped people get off prescription opiates such as oxycontin.

I also saw how marijuana helped cancer patients cope with pain.

Q: Do you have a favorite place to visit? To vacation?

A: I travel so much, I see so many places.

I stop for a day longer in places just to see, just to check out the town.

Q: What is your favorite food?

A: Steak and potatoes.

I eat a lot of sirloin, but when I want to spoil myself I get a "tomahawk cut" of steak.

It's one of the more rare cuts.

It's huge.

I had one for my birthday when I was in El Paso. It cost $150.

I had it medium rare.

Q: What is your favorite saying?

A: "You have any questions, comments or concerns?"

I say it before I leave work every day.
