More Leaders Move to Winston in McDermott Partner Raid

Winston & Strawn made news last week with its hire of 10 partners from McDermott Will & Emery, including Washington, D.C.-based partner David Rogers. He had led McDermott s employee benefits practice and was recently a candidate to take over as chair of the firm.

Winston on Thursday announced the names of the nine other employee benefits-focused partners who will join the firm, and Rogers is far from the lone prominent partner making the move.

The firm announced that Nancy Gerrie, a former managing partner of McDermott s Chicago office who also co-chaired the firm s qualified plans affinity group, will now co-chair Winston s employee benefits and executive compensation practice with Scott Landau, the current New York-based chair of the group.

This group complements and strengthens our already strong EBEC Practice, Tom Fitzgerald, Winston s chairman, said in a statement. We are excited to welcome and integrate this prestigious group of practitioners to the firm, which underscores our commitment to strategic growth in key practice areas and markets.

Among the 10 new partners, seven will be based in Chicago and three in the nation s capital. Apart from Gerrie and Rogers, the partners include:

  • Amy Gordon, who co-chaired McDermott s health and welfare affinity group.

  • Susan Nash, who co-chaired McDermott s health and welfare affinity group.

  • Joseph Adams, who co-chaired McDermott s executive compensation affinity group.

  • Bill Merten, who will chair Winston s employee stock ownership practice after serving in the same leadership role at McDermott.

  • Susan Peters Schaefer, who was a prior chair of McDermott s Employee Retirement Income Security Act fiduciary and investments affinity group.

  • Erin Kartheiser, who focuses on retirement and health and welfare plans and previously worked at Winston before spending 14 years at McDermott.

  • Joanna Kerpen, based in Washington, D.C., advises on health and welfare plan compliance with ERISA, the Internal Revenue Code, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and the Affordable Care Act.

  • Brian Benko, based in Washington, D.C., advises on a broad array of employee benefit and executive compensation matters.

With the addition of this top-ranked EBEC team, we will now be able to offer our corporate clients a broader and more complete human resources service offering, Landau said.

The move is the second large lateral group hire by Winston this year. In February, Winston opened a Dallas office by poaching 26 partners from nine different firms in the city.
