The 2025 College Football National Championship game kicks off on Monday evening between seventh-seed Notre Dame and eighth-seed Ohio State. The football final is sure to generate buzz, but what makes this championship stand out is that it is uniquely expensive. On this week’s episode of Yahoo Finance Sports Report, host Joe Pompliano dives deep into this particular football final as well as all the financials behind it.
The first thing to keep in mind with this game are the school budgets. Notre Dame and Ohio State are two schools with biggest college football budgets, $72M and $72.5M respectively.
The second thing is earnings. Both Notre Dame and Ohio State earned $20M each just for making it to the championship game. To break it down, they earned:
$4M - Qualifying for CFP
$4M - Quarterfinals
$6M - Semifinals
$6M - Championship game
The only difference between the two teams and their winnings is that Notre Dame gets to keep the prize pot for themselves. Ohio State has to share these funds with everyone in their conference and will ultimately walk home with about $2-$2.5 million when all is said and done.
