US inflation rose as expected in December as core CPI softens

The latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) reading saw prices rise by 0.4% monthly and 2.9% annually in December, the inflation data in line with economist expectations. Core CPI — which excludes trends in food and energy costs — rose by 0.2% month-over-month and 3.2% year-over-year, both data sets below forecasts.
