President Trump is set to sign an executive order dismantling the Department of Education. The agency oversees several key aspects of the public education system in the US, including providing and servicing federal student loans and providing about 13% of funding for public schools. It also oversees special education. The NAACP responding to Trump's decision in a statement saying quote, this is a dark day for the millions of American children who depend on federal funding for equality education, including those in poor and rural communities with parents who voted for Trump. Already, 19 states and Washington D.C. have sued the administration over cuts to this department, claiming the agency can no longer function. However, there's one big issue with the president's plan. 60 senators would need to vote in favor of the proposal to abolish the department. That means Republicans would need seven Democratic senators to vote in their favor.
