President-elect Donald Trump is announcing his Cabinet picks with names like Fox News host and Army veteran Pete Hegseth in the Department of Defense and Elon Musk alongside entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy leading the proposed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Hayman Capital Management founder and CIO Kyle Bass joins Asking for a Trend Host Josh Lipton to talk about Trump's picks and what they signal about the former President's plans for US-China relations during his second term in the White House.
"Secretary of State [nominee] Marco Rubio is one of the best picks that President Trump has made so far," Bass says, citing Rubio's record history in the Senate. He also names Rep. Mike Waltz, Trump's pick for national security adviser, and former CIA director John Ratcliffe. "I've not met the Secretary of Defense [nominee] Pat Hegseth, but I've looked at his service history, and he's got a pretty strong service history." Bass adds, "Don't ask me about any other appointments so far."
"We're in a position where we need to be establishing a wartime Cabinet, and I believe that Trump is installing a wartime Cabinet," Bass says, nodding to geopolitical tensions between China and the US. He notes, "I think tariffs are necessary. Do I think 60% tariffs against China are coming? ... That probably won't happen, but I think that it is also going to force some supply chain rethinking. I know a lot of supply chain rethinking has gone on, and more supply chain thinking must go on."
