SoulCycle CEO's top tip for those seeking a career pivot

In This Article:

SoulCycle CEO Evelyn Webster sits down with Wealth! Host Brad Smith to talk about how she pivoted from being a media industry executive to leading the spin class company.

Webster explains that for her, the move to SoulCycle was personal given her love for the company. "I was very intentional about coming to SoulCycle. I love SoulCycle, it... gave me, and gives me personal joy. It was my sanctuary, the place that I went [to] when I was working in media."

"What was interesting is how people box you in. People define you by the thing that you have been doing," the CEO says, adding "For the last, for me, 30 years, I was the media and entertainment person. And of course, I'm not defined by the industry that I worked in. I'm defined by the skills that I've got."

Webster tells Yahoo Finance that the advice she gives to people considering a career pivot is to "be careful that you are able to very clearly articulate the skills that you have that are transferable to any industry or discipline that you might choose to work in because other people will definitely try to define you by your CV, and that doesn't necessarily speak to the actual experience and impact that you can have."
