Movie theaters and IMAX are 'positioned well' for 2025

The movie industry is steadily recovering from pandemic lows, though US box office totals for 2024 are lower than the year prior. Wedbush Securities vice president of equity research, Alicia Reese, joins Julie Hyman to discuss what's on the slate for 2025 and what it means for investors.

"I do think that there's a good variety of titles coming out over the coming year. There are some sequels, there are some Marvel titles, but that's not it. I do see a lot of family-friendly fare on the docket, which, as you can see in the fourth quarter, people are starved for it," Reese says.

The analyst says that movie theaters are "really positioned well" given the variety of films coming to the big screen in 2025, with concession offerings driving revenue per attendee.

She highlights IMAX (IMAX) as a top pick in the space, explaining, "People are certainly going out to see that a lot of titles are going to be on IMAX screens and [watching content] shot with IMAX cameras, [which] can drive some extra viewership, some extra moviegoing."

She says the final "Mission Impossible" movie and the new "Avatar" movie are expected to drive consumers to the theatre.
