A string of layoffs and buyouts across federal agencies have left government workers jobless and seeking new opportunities.
LinkedIn’s career expert Andrew McCaskill advises that to transition successfully, job applicants need to "flip your resume like a pro."
"Frame your expertise in policy or crisis management or compliance in terms that the private sector actually understands," McCaskill says. He adds that you should translate government jargon, like "stakeholder engagement," into terms the private sector understands, such as "corporate partnerships."
McCaskill recommends targeting industries with growth potential, including healthcare and education, which are "hiring above pre-pandemic levels."
Networking is another key strategy McCaskill places emphasis on. "I know I talk about networking a lot, but government careers are built on relationships anyway. And, so if you've been engaging with private sector companies in partnerships and things like that, reach out to those folks that you worked with previously," he preaches.
Catch Andrew McCaskill also discuss the best way to "pivot" and even change industries in this strong, yet competitive job market.
