Gas prices ease slightly amid latest energy inflation data

US energy prices edged higher by 0.2% in February, according to the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) report, cooling gasoline (RB=F) prices indicative of easing for the industry.

Energy prices edged higher in February with some relief in gas prices. Here with a closer look is Yahoo Finance's Ines Ferre, Ines.

Yeah, Josh. And we saw in that CPI print today that gasoline prices went down in February by 1% on a year-over-year basis. Gasoline is down more than 3%. In fact, today the national average is at $3.08 per gallon. That's lower than last year and also last month. When it comes to the index though, as a whole, uh, we are seeing that ga- that index, the energy index, uh, month over month went up by 0.2%. And part of that has to do with natural gas prices, which are up month over month 2.5%, and electricity. A lot of the electricity in the U.S., of course, is derived from natural gas. I will say, if we just show on our interactive screen, that really among the energy players, natural gas is really the outperformer because oil is down year to date, but we are seeing that natural gas is up more than 11% year to date, guys.
