John Augustine, Huntington Private Bank chief investment officer, joins Josh Lipton and Julie Hyman on Market Domination to discuss his market outlook for 2025 and what's ahead this earnings season.
Augustine highlights the "three P's," or three market factors that will be relevant all year: profits, policy, and productivity. He explains, "Productivity, in our view, is what's going to drive profits, because revenue growth is starting to slow down."
Right now, however, Augustine points to bond yields, the US dollar (DX=F), and oil (CL=F, BZ=F) as key areas for investors. "Oil is kind of in this stealth rally now, up to $74 a barrel. That probably is going to dominate the first quarter of this year," he says.
Augustine advises that diversifying income streams may benefit investors. He forecasts, "The second thing that's probably going to have longer legs this year is the concept of income. Income now may be able to smooth out volatility more than it has the last 10, 15 years, because now I'm getting income from all three groups: I'm getting it from cash, I'm getting it from bonds, and I can get it from stocks if I want to diversify away from the Mag Seven."
