  • Technical Assessment: Neutral in the Intermediate-Term

Was the action on Wednesday the result of March "end of quarter" Madness or another "Tariff Tantrum?" Probably both. Either way, stocks got rocked, putting a dent in the theory that the worst may be over. But it's just one day and the major indices held immediate- and short-term support. Some of the largest losers in the S&P 500 (SPX) and Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) were former market leaders that were trashed starting in late January and into the recent low on March 13. Of course, many of the stocks rallied nicely during the past eight days (ending March 25), so some give-back was to be expected. That is especially true at the end of a quarter, when portfolio managers clean up their portfolios, dumping the weakest stocks over the past three months. This is most commonly known as "window dressing" or "rebalancing." The weakest names in the "500" on Wednesday included SMCI, ANET, VST, PWR, GEV, NVDA, TSLA, MPWR, NRG, ETN, AVGO, PLTR, ENPH, and CEG. In the QQQ, ARM, MRVL, MELI, APP, TTD, AMD, MSTR, and CRWD all took it on the chin. It's not hard to see where the weakness was concentrated: IT, specifically semiconductors and utilities that have benefited from the AI/data center build outs. The SPX held its 10-day exponential moving average (EMA) as well as the top of its recent minor breakout area near 5,700; the Nasdaq filled its open price gap from March 24 and also held the top of its minor base; and the QQQ held its 10-day EMA and minor chart support. So despite the size of the losses, the short-term uptrend is still intact and no additional technical damage was done. (Mark Arbeter, CMT)
