Volkswagen to keep vehicle prices steady through May

Volkswagen confirmed Wednesday that it is joining the growing group of automakers committing to keeping prices steady to ease car shoppers' concerns around tariffs. Automakers have provided stability, and even deep discounts, to consumers amid worries that tariffs will drive up prices on dealer lots. German carmaker Volkswagen confirmed it is holding prices steady through May, a similar move to Hyundai Motor, which committed to maintaining sticker prices on its current models through June 2.

As tariffs spiral between the U.S. and China, between China and Europe they are showing early signs of falling, potentially helping BYD and hurting Tesla. The European Commission in Brussels, which handles trade on behalf of the European Union, confirmed Friday it is in talks with Beijing about an alternative to its current tariffs on Chinese EVs. In a conversation Tuesday, EU trade commissioner, Maroš Šefčovič, and Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao discussed the idea of price undertakings, whereby manufacturers agree to minimum prices, a spokesman said.

Volkswagen's Scania buys bankrupt Northvolt's heavy industry battery packs unit

Volkswagen's truckmaker Scania said on Friday it had agreed to buy bankrupt Northvolt's division that makes battery packs for heavy industry, reviving a transaction first presented in February, for an undisclosed price. Sweden's Northvolt filed for bankruptcy last month in one of the country's largest corporate failures, bringing to an end Europe's best hope of developing a rival to Asian electric vehicle battery makers. Scania, part of Volkswagen's truck unit Traton, had in February offered to buy Northvolt Systems Industrial for $6 million, but the bankruptcy put the plan on hold.

BERLIN (Reuters) -Volkswagen Group's sales of battery-electric cars more than doubled in Europe in the first quarter but fell by over a third in China, data showed on Wednesday, in a sign of the automaker's diverging fortunes in the electric car market. In a reversal of fortunes for Volkswagen and EV maker Tesla, Volkswagen vehicles made up seven of the ten bestselling models in Germany in the quarter, according to data from the KBA motor authority, while Tesla's Model Y dropped to seventh in the rankings from first after sales fell nearly 70%. Tesla's market share has shrunk even as the rest of the EV market picks up, as controversy over CEO Elon Musk's support for far-right politicians and an ageing model line-up has stymied sales.
