StanChart pledges to cut emissions linked to oil and gas bonds Standard Chartered on Friday pledged to cut the emissions linked to the bonds it sells for oil and gas companies and will press ahead with its net-zero strategy, in contrast with other lenders who are reassessing their climate plans. The London-listed bank plans to reduce by 26.9% the polluting emissions associated with bond deals it arranges for oil and gas companies by 2030, it said as it announced an 18% annual profit jump and $1.5 billion share buyback. Most large banks have targets for reducing emissions associated with their lending, but only a handful have set so-called facilitated emissions. Standard Chartered to invest US$1.5 billion in profit-driving wealth business Standard Chartered, one of Hong Kong's three note-issuing banks, will invest US$1.5 billion in its wealth-management business over the next five years as robust growth in serving affluent clients drove the lender's profit 19 per cent higher in 2024. Hong Kong would be one of the focus areas for the investment, CEO Bill Winters said on Friday. The Asia, Africa and Middle East-focused bank is doubling down on its mainstay wealth management and markets business, even as an uncertain global growth outlook and a divergent interest rate policy are expected to cast a cloud over Western banks in the near term. "Growth in our footprint markets across Asia, Africa and the Middle East is set to outpace global growth... and we are uniquely positioned to take advantage of this," StanChart CEO Bill Winters said in the bank's earnings statement. Standard Chartered, Animoca Brands, and HKT Partner To Launch Hong Kong Dollar-Backed Stablecoin as Regulatory Framework Advances Standard Chartered, Animoca Brands, and HKT have partnered to launch a Hong Kong dollar-backed stablecoin. Standard Chartered, HKT, Animoca to form JV for HK dollar-backed stablecoin Standard Chartered said it has entered agreements with Animoca Brands, a company which specialises in Web3 for leveraging blockchains, and HKT, a major telecommunications service provider in Hong Kong, in order to "enable the JV to tap into crypto-native opportunities" and "enhance both domestic and cross-border payments", according to its statement.
