The fund invests mainly in common stocks of small U.S. companies, with a focus on value stocks. Value stocks are issued by companies that are currently undervalued by the market. The fund invests at least 80% of its net assets in companies of a size similar to those in the Russell 2000 Value Index. The adviser may consider, among other factors, a company's valuation, financial strength, and growth potential, competitive position in its industry, projected future earnings, cash flows and dividends when deciding whether to buy or sell investments.

Management Information

Mr. Petro is the Portfolio Manager of Putnam`s Small Cap Value and BDC Income strategies. He is responsible for the overall strategy and positioning of Putnam`s small-cap value and BDC (business development company) capabilities. Mr. Petro joined Putnam in 2002 and has been in the investment industry since 1999. Previously as an Analyst, Mr. Petro covered multiple sectors in the small-cap value universe, including financial services, health care, technology, capital goods, and telecommunication services. Prior to joining Putnam, Mr. Petro was a Senior Research Associate at RBC Capital Markets, formerly known as Dain Rauscher Wessels, from 1999 to 2001, and served as a Principal Engineer at Quickware Engineering & Design, LLC from 1989 to 1999. Mr. Petro earned an M.S. from the University of Michigan and a B.S. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
