Japan's Nomura ties up with regional bank Hyakujushi to boost wealth business

TOKYO (Reuters) -Nomura Holdings, Japan's largest securities firm, said on Monday it has partnered with regional lender Hyakujushi Bank to boost its wealth management services. Hyakujushi Bank, based in Kagawa prefecture, will pass on some of its customer accounts, such as stock and bond investment trust accounts, to Nomura, which, in turn, will transfer staff to Hyakujushi and provide access to its financial platform, according to the statement from Nomura. Japan's financial institutions have sought to develop their asset and wealth management businesses to generate income from the mammoth savings held by Japanese households, of which around half is currently held in cash and deposits.

Head of Japan's Nomura apologises after former employee charged with attempted murder

The head of Nomura Holdings on Tuesday apologised after a former employee was last month charged with multiple crimes including attempted murder and robbery, in what has become the latest public scandal for the powerhouse Japanese brokerage. CEO Kentaro Okuda made the apology before his presentation at an investor summit, where he said the firm has room to cut costs by a further 28 billion yen ($187 million) in the short- to medium-term. The former employee, who provided asset management advice to individual and corporate clients, was suspected of robbing a client and having caused a fire at the client's home in July, Nomura said in a release.

TOKYO (Reuters) -Japan's Nomura Holdings more than doubled its quarterly profit on Friday, boosted by strong performance at its wholesale and wealth management businesses during a quarter overshadowed by a bond trading scandal. Nomura delivered its highest profit in four years and its sixth quarter of growth, results that may take some of the sting out of the recent scandal. Japan's biggest brokerage was forced to pay a regulatory fine and temporarily lost its status as a primary dealer of government bonds.
