For example, I asked R1 about one endless debate: “At their peaks, who was the better basketball player, Michael Jordan or LeBron James?” The first thing R1 did was have a 900-word conversation with itself, exploring the two men’s careers, and the meanings of “peak” and “better.” The startling claims made by DeepSeek is that the underlying model to R1, which is called V3 and doesn’t reason, was made on 2,048 AI accelerators in under two months for less than $6 million.
