Inditex-owned fast-fashion retailer Zara opened what it dubbed a new-style Asia flagship store in the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing on Friday as part of its global push to cut underperforming shops and double down on larger retail formats. The Spanish company has put in place more digital integration and spaces designed to encourage shoppers to spend more time in-store, with the new features to be trialled in China before it decides whether to expand them to other markets. The need to revitalise Zara's retail network has been particularly apparent in China.

Zara owner Inditex's transport emissions jump in 2024

LONDON (Reuters) -Zara owner Inditex's emissions from transport jumped by 10% in 2024 as the fast-fashion retailer used more flights to move clothes from production centres in Asia to its logistics hub in Spain and into stores. The increase highlights the impact of greater air freight use as attacks on container ships in the Red Sea have diverted vessels from the Suez Canal route to a much longer route around Africa to transport products from Asia. In its annual report published on Friday, Inditex said emissions from upstream transportation and distribution were 2,614,230 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2eq) in its 2024 financial year ending January 31, up 10% from 2,378,464 tonnes in 2023.

Inditex Chief Executive Officer Oscar Garcia Maceiras said constantly changing news on tariffs and geopolitics was making it difficult to make long-term predictions, the latest business leader to highlight the impact of uncertainty as U.S. President Donald Trump overhauls trade and foreign policy. Inditex sales were up just 4% in currency-neutral terms over the February 1 to March 10 period, compared to 11% growth a year ago.

Family-owned Zicaffe, which roasts and exports coffee blends, lodged its response to the Spanish fashion chain's patent application on December 25, according to official records published on EUIOP's website seen by Reuters. Zicaffe said 'zi' and 'za' are too close and there is a likelihood of confusion, unfair advantage and harm to the distinctiveness of its own brand.
