Tech gains will broaden beyond megacaps in 2025: Strategist

Tech stocks pull back after the Federal Reserve delivered a hawkish cut at its final meeting of 2024. BMO Wealth Management chief investment officer Yung-Yu Ma joins Madison Mills and Julie Hyman on Catalysts to discuss his 2025 outlook for tech stocks. "We think, going into 2025, we still want to be leaning into risk here. We think the pullback in the tech sector, in particular, probably presents opportunities here. We think there's still a lot of growth to come," Ma says, adding, "We think there is broadening, especially among tech companies, that help other companies become more efficient and improve productivity using some of those AI tools in ways that benefit companies." Affordability woes in a strong economy: 2025 housing market outlook

With the new year around the corner, Zillow Group (Z) chief economist Skylar Olsen joins Brad Smith on Wealth to talk about her expectations for the housing market in 2025. Olsen says that, looking to 2025, Zillow is "thinking about the affordability challenge, but also thinking about the strength and the economy." She explains, "Put two of those things together, and you've got a lot of buyers in make-it-work mode," meaning buyers are "still trying to take advantage of more affordable" opportunities like buying a home outside of major cities. "We're thinking about the rental market, which will be more important next year because of the continued barriers to the for sale side," the economist says, since there are "generations of people who are going to be renting for longer." As mortgage rates are expected to stay higher for longer, "Zillow does expect probably fewer new listings from existing owners than we did just a couple months ago moving into that next year. Stocks will see 'increased volatility' in early 2025: Strategist

The Federal Reserve cut interest rates by 25 basis points in their final meeting of 2024, but markets sold off after the central bank officials projected only two rate cuts for 2025. BMO Private Wealth chief market strategist Carol Schleif joined Morning Brief to analyze the implications. Schleif says during Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's press conference, "he tried repeatedly" to emphasize the economy's strength. With the economy still robust, "inflation doesn't come down as fast as they thought," Schleif adds. She explains that the Fed's "slow and cautious approach" aims to "position themselves to absorb potential policy changes coming in." Looking ahead, she expects "pretty dramatically increased volatility" in early 2025. Schleif recommends investors maintain diversified portfolios with short-term fixed income (^TYX, ^TNX, ^FVX) to "act as ballast." Mortgage rates creating 'tug-of-war' with affordability: Fannie Mae

The Federal Reserve cut interest rates by 25 basis points at their final meeting of 2024 with a majority of central bank officials now expecting to only cut rates twice in 2025. What kind of impacts could this have on mortgage rates and the US housing market? Fannie Mae (Federal National Mortgage Association) chief economist Mark Palim sits down with Josh Lipton talk about more about pricing trends in the housing market. Fannie Mae's affiliate organization, the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (or Freddie Mac), is scheduled to release the latest mortgage rate figures Thursday morning. "The key issue for the housing market in the United States, for sure, has been affordability, of which high mortgage rates [are] definitely part of that discussion and it's also being renter affordability," Palim says. "The Fed today came out and ratified... bond market investor concerns about whether inflation would be as stickier than it looked six months ago, or that they even looked at the beginning of the year. So you should expect mortgage rates to... remain a little higher than they might have otherwise been." Palim describes mortgage rates, a key component for the lock-in effect for homeowners, as being in a "tug-of-war" with housing affordability: "People don't want to move and give up that 3% mortgage rate and affordability. We started the year with existing home sales running at 4.2 million; we're ending the year running... around 4 million. So you're seeing the higher rates relative to where they were a few years ago really starting to affect demand."
