French TV regulator to rule on Eutelsat's potential sanctions breach 'very shortly'

France's Arcom will rule on Eutelsat's compliance with European sanctions against Russia soon, the broadcasting authority told Reuters, following requests from several NGOs that it should take action against the satellite provider. "The process of investigating the cases reported to Arcom is nearing completion, and the authority's college is due to rule very shortly on the actions to be taken," it said in an emailed statement. Eutelsat in 2022 stopped broadcasting three Russian TV channels after Arcom urged it to do so, but it still has contracts with Russian companies such as the army's broadcasting unit Zvezda and state media holding VGTRK.

Shares in Franco-British satellite operator Eutelsat pulled back on Friday after soaring nearly 500% this week on the prospect of potentially replacing Starlink in Ukraine. By 0855 GMT, Eutelsat's shares were down 16.6% at 5.77 euros, after rallying 477% this week as of Thursday's close. Suggestions the company could replace Elon Musk's Starlink in providing internet access to war-torn Ukraine have fuelled a turnaround in sentiment this week for a stock that had been languishing at record lows.

MILAN (Reuters) -Shares in Franco-British satellite operator Eutelsat rose on Thursday, bringing gains over four days to near 650% in a rally that bears the hallmarks of retail traders amplifying moves on a highly shorted stock. "This is a classic short squeeze of relatively unheard-of proportions, but to be fair, proportionate to the tectonic shifts we see in global geopolitics since the election of Trump," Bernstein analyst Aleksander Peterc said. The rally started after Friday's public row between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and U.S. President Donald Trump, after which Washington paused military aid to Ukraine.

Franco-British satellite operator Eutelsat, a rival to Starlink, is among companies that are in talks with the Italian government to provide systems for secure satellite communications, two sources close to the matter told Reuters. Italy is aiming to guarantee encrypted communications between the government, diplomats and defence officials operating in risky areas, and Eutelsat is among the contenders, along with Elon Musk's Starlink, the officials said.

(Reuters) -Eutelsat is in talks with the European Union to supply additional internet access to Ukraine, it said on Tuesday, amid a two-day surge in its shares on the prospect that OneWeb satellites could replace Elon Musk's Starlink there. The rally follows Friday's clash between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and U.S. President Donald Trump that raised to question Starlink's future in Ukraine. Since then, leaders from major European economies have agreed to ramp up defence spending and the European Commission proposed a 800 billion euro defence plan for the region.
