Airbus in better shape than feared but risks ahead, CEO tells staff

The CEO of Europe's Airbus has told staff that the group ended 2024 in better shape than it feared when cutting profit targets last summer, while warning of increased risks to its business from a worsening international environment. Referring to group-wide performance, Guillaume Faury said in a New Year memo seen by Reuters: "From an operational point of view, we finished the year in a better state than we feared when we changed our guidance to the financial markets" in July. An Airbus spokesperson said it never comments on internal correspondence.

Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury said he could see the two separate European programmes working on new fighter jets and combat air systems being combined in future or at least designed to work together. Britain, Italy and Japan said in December they were setting up a joint company to develop, design and build an advanced stealth jet, named GCAP, while France, Germany and Spain are working on the rival FCAS project. "Each and every country could contribute its financial and technological capacity to a bigger programme for Europe, because that's what we need at the end."

LONDON (Reuters) -The chief executive of Airbus said he was confident the company would reach its target of manufacturing 75 single-aisle aircraft a month in 2027, given its investment, focus on its supply chain and the hiring of people ahead of time. The European planemaker had in July cut its annual delivery target to "around 770" aircraft from 800 after Faury said he had been "blind-sided" by a drop in supplies from enginemaker CFM. As production ramps up towards target, Faury said Airbus was trying to ensure that each supplier has a plan in place to overcome potential issues.

Airbus delivered 766 jets in 2024 and looked certain to maintain leadership of the jetmaking industry for a sixth year as arch-rival Boeing recovers cautiously from a prolonged internal crisis, company data showed on Thursday.
