France’s Macron Says Tariffs Pause ‘Remains Fragile’

The partial suspension of U.S. tariffs “remains fragile,” and the European Union must continue to prepare counter-measures to defend itself, French President Emmanuel Macron said Friday. While the pause opens a door for talks, Macron said in a post on X, it also continues “uncertainty for businesses on both sides of the Atlantic” and leaves intact the 25% tariffs on steel and cars, and 10% tariffs on other goods.

Yen Strengthens Amid Growing U.S. Recession Fears

The announced 90-day pause on all of the April 2 tariffs announcements beyond the 10% baseline rate excluding on China has “done little to alleviate concerns the U.S. may be heading into recession,” Ray Attrill of National Australia Bank said. The yen was up 1.2% at 142.69 to the dollar in recent trading. “Amid the return of risk-off sentiment, support for the USD [U.S. dollar] is nowhere to be seen,” the head of FX Research added.
