India's Reliance jumps as telecom, retail boost brightens outlook

(Reuters) -Shares of India's Reliance Industries jumped 4% on Monday as investors cheered strength in its telecom and retail businesses after a quarterly profit beat, prompting analysts to upgrade the stock after months of underperformance. Over the last year, the billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led conglomerate has done worse than India's benchmark Nifty 50 index, which Jefferies said was amid concerns of a slowdown in its retail business. Analysts see the trend changing after Reliance beat fourth-quarter profit estimates, largely boosted by its retail and telecom units.

Around a third of the Nifty's gains came from oil-to-telecom conglomerate Reliance Industries, which jumped 3% and hit a six-month high after beating analysts' estimates for quarterly earnings. "RIL's analyst meeting had a confident tone on the outlook for consumer retail growth normalisation back to double digits and domestic fuel sales increases, with details on ramp-up of the new energy vertical," Morgan Stanley said in a note.

Toyota considers investing in potential $42 billion buyout of key supplier

TOKYO (Reuters) -Toyota Motor said it is exploring the possibility of investing in a potential buyout of key parts supplier Toyota Industries - a buyout that reportedly could cost $42 billion. "We are currently exploring various possibilities, including partial investment," the automaker said in a filing with the Tokyo stock exchange on Saturday following reports about the possible buyout. Bloomberg News reported on Friday that Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda and his founder family have proposed acquiring Toyota Industries in a possible 6 trillion yen ($42 billion) deal.
