Wells Fargo beats profit estimates but CEO warns tariffs could slow growth

(Reuters) -Wells Fargo's profit rose 6% in the first quarter as it collected more fees in wealth management and investment banking, but its CEO warned that U.S. tariffs risk slowing economic growth. The optimism, however, unraveled over the last week as President Donald Trump's fluctuating announcements on tariffs stoked concerns about inflation that could tip the U.S. economy into a recession. "We support the administration's willingness to look at barriers to fair trade for the United States, though there are certainly risks associated with such significant actions," CEO Charlie Scharf said in a statement.
