SEOUL (Reuters) -South Korea's SK Hynix forecast sales of its high-end semiconductors used in generative artificial intelligence chipsets would double this year after reporting a record quarterly profit that surpassed its bigger rival Samsung. Shares in SK Hynix, a key supplier to AI chip giant Nvidia, however, dropped 3% on Thursday as the company warned of steeper demand declines in commodity memory chips used in smartphones and computers, due to economic uncertainty and growing competition from Chinese rivals. Before the result, SK Hynix shares had jumped about 30% so far this year on bullish sentiment driven by its business discussions with Nvidia, outperforming Samsung, whose shares rose 2% over the same period.

Alaska Air Group on Wednesday topped Wall Street estimates for fourth-quarter profit and forecast a smaller-than-expected loss for the current quarter, driven by strong holiday and corporate travel demand as well as improved pricing power. Alaska, which completed the acquisition of peer Hawaiian in September, cited sustained leisure demand, an uptick in corporate travel, and mild winter weather, for its higher revenue during the holiday quarter. "Overall revenue trends continued to be really, really strong across pretty much the entire network," Chief Financial Officer Shane Tackett said in an interview.

The Federal Reserve's decision to lower interest rates and hopes of a soft landing for the economy helped ease lenders' concerns about potential credit defaults in 2025.
