(Reuters) -Truck maker Volvo lowered its North America market outlook on Wednesday, pointing to increased uncertainty around tariffs and their impact on global trade, as it reported a bigger-than-expected fall in first-quarter profit. The Swedish group said it now sees the North American heavy truck market at 275,000 new vehicles this year. Volvo repeated a market outlook for 290,000 new heavy trucks in Europe, adding however that current market conditions meant forecasts were subject to significant uncertainty.

Volvo Group plans to lay off as many as 800 workers at three U.S. facilities over the next three months due to market uncertainty and demand concerns in the face of President Donald Trump's tariffs, a spokesperson said on Friday. Volvo Group North America said in a statement it has told employees it plans to lay off 550-800 people at its Mack Trucks site in Macungie, Pennsylvania, and two Volvo Group facilities in Dublin, Virginia, and Hagerstown, Maryland. The company, part of Sweden's AB Volvo, employs nearly 20,000 people in North America, according to its website.

Volvo Cars is one of the most exposed automakers to U.S. President Donald Trump's auto tariffs as it imports most of its hybrid and electric models from Europe. A Volvo spokesperson declined to comment when contacted by Reuters.

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) -Volvo Cars sold 70,737 cars in March, down 10% from a year earlier as sales of fully electric cars tumbled, the Sweden-based company said on Wednesday, sending its shares down. Volvo Cars, which is majority-owned by China's Geely, said in a statement sales in Europe were down 9% while in the United States and China they were down 8% and 22%, respectively. Sales of fully electric cars fell 26% to account for 19% of total sales, while sales of electrified cars as a whole, also including plug-in hybrids, were down 9% to 43% of total sales.
