McDonald’s said Friday that it’s closing down CosMc’s, a new restaurant format it began piloting in the U.S. last year. Among the drinks on CosMc’s current menu: a matcha iced latte, a turmeric spiced latte, a prickly pear-flavored slushy with popping candy on top and a frozen sour cherry energy drink. McDonald’s announced in late 2023 that it wanted to test a small-format store with customizable drinks and treats that would appeal to afternoon snackers – and potentially grab sales from rivals like Starbucks and Dutch Bros. McDonald's sales often slump in the afternoon between mealtimes and the company wants to change that.

(Reuters) -McDonald's Corp is shutting down the five beverage-centered CosMc's stores it opened in 2023, but said some drinks from the standalone concept would be tested in McDonald's restaurants. The company said on Friday it had opened the stores as a test to learn more about the “fast-growing beverage space,” which it said it had a “right to win.” It said the standalone stores – in markets including San Antonio, Texas – allowed it to test new flavor and technologies without impacting existing McDonald’s restaurants.

The fast-food giant said Friday that it will pull the plug on its beverage-oriented offshoot, called CosMc’s after a McDonald’s alien mascot of old.
