Bond market is 'screaming' at Fed to stop rate cuts

Innovator Capital Management chief investment strategist Tim Urbanowicz joins Market Domination Overtime to discuss his outlook on inflation and earnings after President Trump called for lower interest rates at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Thursday. Urbanowicz observes that bond yields (^TYX, ^TNX, ^FVX) have been climbing since the Federal Reserve began cutting interest rates in September. He states, "It is very clear to us that the bond market is screaming at the Fed to stop cutting interest rates." He warns that continued rate cuts could potentially reignite inflationary pressures. While he characterizes the current interest rate environment as a "threat" to markets (^DJI, ^IXIC, ^GSPC), Urbanowicz believes ultimately that "investors are going to look through that; they're going to focus on earnings." He adds, "If we look at the backdrop over the last year and the outlook moving forward, there's a lot to like." Trump's tariff rhetoric may be 'statecraft,' not economics

The US stock market (^GSPC, ^IXIC, ^DJI) ignored tariff concerns, while Hong Kong’s market dropped due to President Donald Trump’s tariff threats on Canada, Mexico, and China, set for February 1st. Jeffrey Kleintop, Charles Schwab’s chief global investment strategist, joins Catalysts to explain that tariff risks are largely priced into European and Chinese markets in particular. "Europe and China look a little bit better positioned heading into what could be a whole new regime for trade, whereas Mexico and Canada could have maybe a little bit more downside," Kleintop says. Kleintop agrees with Goldman's decision to lower the odds for President Trump implementing his aggressive tariff rhetoric. He explains, "A lot of what Trump has talked about isn’t really economic policy when it comes to tariffs; it's statecraft." He notes that it’s about leveraging trade to gain concessions in areas like immigration and energy. Fed's rate-cut view set to test resurgent US stocks rally

The Federal Reserve's first meeting of 2025 in the coming week stands to test the resurgence in U.S. stocks as investors gauge the extent of more equity-friendly interest rate cuts in the months ahead. Stocks swooned after the Fed's last meeting in December, when the central bank downgraded its forecast for rate cuts as it braced for firmer inflation this year. The Fed is broadly expected to pause its easing cycle when it gives its monetary policy statement on Wednesday, with investors instead focused on "what would need to happen for them to start talking about resuming the rate cuts," said Angelo Kourkafas, senior investment strategist at Edward Jones.

Stock Futures Fall, Dollar Drops. What Trump Tariff Talk Means for Markets.

U.S. stock futures and the dollar were both sliding on Friday as Asian markets rallied after President Trump signaled he wouldn’t rush to raise tariffs on China. The moves came after Trump said he “would rather not” hike levies on imports from China, but added that the option to do so gives Washington “tremendous power” over Beijing. The president has yet to make any big moves on tariffs since he returned to the White House, although he has pledged to impose a 25% tax on goods from Canada and Mexico on Feb. 1.
