Where investors are finding safety from volatility, rate cuts

The Russell 2000 small cap index (^RUT) saw its biggest decline since 2020 following the Federal Reserve's hawkish pivot, now signaling fewer interest rate cuts planned for 2025. Concerns are now arising around small-cap stocks and whether the asset class still functions as an investor safe haven from volatility. Envestnet Solutions Co-Chief investment officer Dana D'Auria joins Morning Brief hosts Seana Smith and Brad Smith to talk about small-cap stocks' interest rate sensitivity, calling the category a "tough play" while maneuvering through its own volatility.  Investors seeking out a safe haven could turn to tech stocks for a more defensive route, D'Auria suggests, though warns about the sector's heavy concentration in the market. "It's really hard to be very far from Big Tech. So I think plowing even more money into Big Tech, kind of exacerbates that concentration issue for you. If you know, the traditional place to sort of sit in the markets, if you want a little bit of padding is something more like defensive, true, defensive, which would be quality indicators" and low volatility indicators. Why volatility in equities is really an 'opportunity': Portfolio mgr.

The Volatility Index (^VIX) surged to 58, its highest level since August, following Fed Chair Powell's press conference, which provided limited guidance on monetary policy direction after Wednesday's 25 basis point rate cut. HSBC Global Private Banking and Wealth Global CIO Willem Sels joins Catalysts to share his market (^DJI, ^IXIC, ^GSPC) outlook. Sels explains that market volatility is increasing because early 2025 will bring "a period where you have lots of policy announcements and therefore, then, people trying to assess what is going to be the impact on the economy, on inflation, and therefore on the Fed policy as well." This uncertainty, he notes, is driving the current volatility spike. "In the equity market space, you have the positive side and a negative side together," Sels adds, highlighting the economy's resilience, sustained earnings growth, and prospects for deregulation and innovation. He remains optimistic about market performance in the upcoming year, suggesting investors should "see volatility as an opportunity." Stocks will see 'increased volatility' in early 2025: Strategist

The Federal Reserve cut interest rates by 25 basis points in their final meeting of 2024, but markets sold off after the central bank officials projected only two rate cuts for 2025. BMO Private Wealth chief market strategist Carol Schleif joined Morning Brief to analyze the implications. Schleif says during Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's press conference, "he tried repeatedly" to emphasize the economy's strength. With the economy still robust, "inflation doesn't come down as fast as they thought," Schleif adds. She explains that the Fed's "slow and cautious approach" aims to "position themselves to absorb potential policy changes coming in." Looking ahead, she expects "pretty dramatically increased volatility" in early 2025. Schleif recommends investors maintain diversified portfolios with short-term fixed income (^TYX, ^TNX, ^FVX) to "act as ballast."
