Three reasons why the economy is still strong

RSM chief economist Joe Brusuelas joins Market Domination to discuss what is next for the US economy. Brusuelas points out that the economy grew at a 3% pace in the second half of 2024, while inflation remains persistent, particularly in the services sector. Combined with uncertainty surrounding the incoming presidential administration, "it spooked the market a little bit," he tells Yahoo Finance. Looking ahead to 2025, he projects an average 10-year yield of 4.5%, warning that if yields reach 5%, conditions could "get a little shaky." He references March 2023, when the 10-year yield exceeded 5%, triggering a mini-banking crisis among local and regional banks that required Federal Reserve intervention before things "materially improved." However, he observes that the post-pandemic economy has become more inflation-prone, stating "this economy is growing at a much faster pace than the long term trend would otherwise suggest," adding "Our framework looks pretty good right now." Value stocks will have 'more of a story' in 2025: Portfolio mgr.

With the Santa Claus in question, some investors are highlighting market dislocations. Globalt Investments senior portfolio manager Keith Buchanan joins Catalysts to discuss where he sees these trends emerging. Buchanan identifies several areas of dislocation, including growth versus value stocks, spending patterns, and the relationship between bonds and stocks. "We feel like 2025 really could be a year where all those have to resolve themselves... in one fashion or another," he explains, noting that these resolutions could trend either positively or negatively. Discussing the growth versus value dynamic, Buchanan warns that continued dominance of growth stocks could make the market more "top-heavy than it is." He cautions, "If the economy doesn't hold up and consumer spending doesn't continue... growth, in our opinion, is extremely vulnerable as the economic stress would hit those highest valuation names most certainly the quickest." However, Buchanan characterizes 2023 and 2024 trading as "one-sided" and "up to the right," predicting a more "balanced" market environment in 2025.
