Zoomd Technologies (CVE:ZOMD) Posted Healthy Earnings But There Are Some Other Factors To Be Aware Of
In This Article:
Unsurprisingly, Zoomd Technologies Ltd.'s (CVE:ZOMD) stock price was strong on the back of its healthy earnings report. We did some analysis and think that investors are missing some details hidden beneath the profit numbers.
Zooming In On Zoomd Technologies' Earnings
Many investors haven't heard of the accrual ratio from cashflow, but it is actually a useful measure of how well a company's profit is backed up by free cash flow (FCF) during a given period. In plain english, this ratio subtracts FCF from net profit, and divides that number by the company's average operating assets over that period. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.
That means a negative accrual ratio is a good thing, because it shows that the company is bringing in more free cash flow than its profit would suggest. While it's not a problem to have a positive accrual ratio, indicating a certain level of non-cash profits, a high accrual ratio is arguably a bad thing, because it indicates paper profits are not matched by cash flow. That's because some academic studies have suggested that high accruals ratios tend to lead to lower profit or less profit growth.
For the year to March 2025, Zoomd Technologies had an accrual ratio of 0.24. Unfortunately, that means its free cash flow fell significantly short of its reported profits. In fact, it had free cash flow of US$11m in the last year, which was a lot less than its statutory profit of US$13.1m. We note, however, that Zoomd Technologies grew its free cash flow over the last year. The good news for shareholders is that Zoomd Technologies' accrual ratio was much better last year, so this year's poor reading might simply be a case of a short term mismatch between profit and FCF. Shareholders should look for improved cashflow relative to profit in the current year, if that is indeed the case.
