YKK’s long-term targets include reducing absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 90 percent by FY2050 from a FY2018 base year and reducing absolute scope 3 GHG emissions 90 percent within the same timeframe. The remaining 10 percent of emissions in the net-zero target must be reduced to zero through carbon absorption and removal.
The company previously received SBTi validation in for its near-term targets of reducing absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 50.4 percent by FY2030 from a FY2018 base year and reducing absolute scope 3 GHG emissions 30 percent within the same timeframe.
The targets are part of the zipper maker’s broader plan, YKK Sustainability Vision 2050. The sustainability plan focuses five key areas (climate change, material resources, water resources, chemical management, and respect for people) and aligns with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
Minoru Maeda, executive officer and general manager of the environmental and safety management department for YKK Corporation, said achieving SBTi’s Net-Zero Standard is the result of the company’s Cycle of Goodness, a philosophy based on the idea that businesses should benefit society, not just individuals.
“At YKK, we strive to realize ‘better products at a lower cost and greater speed, more sustainably.’ To remain a socially responsible company, we pursue sustainability in all processes, from selecting environmentally friendly materials to manufacturing,” Maeda said. “We are accelerating our efforts to achieve net zero emissions through technological innovation. Moving forward, we will continue to work diligently with our partner companies and customers to build a more sustainable future.”
SBTi is a leading organization that helps companies set GHG emissions reduction targets based on the latest climate science. Its standards and tools enable businesses to align their goals with the global effort to limit warming to well below 2°C, and ideally 1.5°C, to avert the most catastrophic impacts of climate change and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 at the latest.
YKK’s net-zero target validation is in the textile, apparel, footwear, and luxury goods sector.
