Taiwanese container shipping company Yang Ming Marine Transport (Yang Ming) has announced a fleet optimisation plan following its 400th board meeting.
The strategy includes acquiring up to 13 container vessels, ranging from 8,000 twenty-foot equivalent (TEU) to 15,000TEU, to enhance its service network and fleet competitiveness.
This move is part of Yang Ming's strategy to replace older vessels with more energy-efficient and eco-friendly options.
By replacing its over-two-decade-old 5,500 to 6,500TEU class containerships, Yang Ming intends to bolster the operational advantages of its main service routes.
The adoption of clean energy and energy-saving technologies is also a significant aspect of the plan, helping to address climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
In addition to fleet modernisation, Yang Ming is launching the new India Ocean Express service (ISE), which will provide direct connections from West India, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan to North Europe.
The ISE service is set to support the Indian Subcontinent's trade needs, with the first voyage scheduled to depart on 5 February 2025 from Karachi, routed via the Cape of Good Hope, and arriving at London Gateway on 16 March 2025.
The service rotation will include stops at Karachi, Hazira, Mundra, Nhava Sheva, Colombo, London Gateway, Rotterdam, Hamburg, and Antwerp.
In September, ONE, HMM, and Yang Ming announced the MSC deal for the new Premier Alliance. Starting in February 2025, the former THE Alliance will be rebranded as the Premier Alliance.
Ocean Network Express (ONE), HMM, and Yang Ming Marine Transportation will maintain their collaboration, with additional support from MSC.
Despite Hapag-Lloyd's departure to join Maersk in forming the Gemini Cooperation, the three carriers confirmed they would continue their alliance under the new name, focusing on East-West trade routes.
