WV tourism and how it affects the Mountain State

PRINCETON, WV (WVNS) – West Virginia is well known for her running rivers, glorious mountains and hearty residents.

Tourism is branching out and exposing the mountain state for its gorgeous views and bringing in money to the state.

Exactly how much revenue is being brought into our local businesses and shops?

Mercer County Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive  Director, Jaime Null, reassures the public that West Virginia tourism is only getting better and brighter. Especially when it comes to small businesses and restaurants in our region.

“People come here you know, when they go to a restaurant or what6ever, they are getting a great first impression. Because you know, when people come to visit, they want to do what locals do,” said Null.

Not only does tourism highlight the beauty of the state, but these tourist destinations also bring in jobs for locals.

In 2023, Jim Justice announced that tourism brought in $5.3 billion dollars to West Virginia.

Null echoes the success that reached Mercer County.

“In 2023 we had almost 2000 tourism jobs in Mercer County and that is just going to increase as more people come in here to visit as more things are planned for the county. So right now, we have 2000 tourism jobs,” said Null.

From Bridge Day on the New River Gorge Bridge to the expansion of ATV trails over the Appalachian Mountains, social media has helped in spreading word about tourism right under our feet.

While these attractions might guide visitors to West Virginia, the attractions and culture are what keep them here.

“So, the occupancy number increases so we know how many people are coming. That huge spending number also tells us that they are going places like restaurants and attractions and tours,” said Null.

So next time you are looking for an activity or something to do on the weekends, remember the real adventure is right in our backyard.
