THE BIG STORY

[bs-title]Global girl power[/bs-title]

[bs-content]This year's Time 100 list of influential people includes powerful women you know well, such as Angela Merkel, Hillary Clinton, and rapper Nicki Minaj. But there's also a group of women on the list you may not be so familiar with. Each one has made a contribution in her own right. Take Costa Rican diplomat Christiana Figueres, the executive secretary of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change, who's managed successful international climate conferences; Gambian Activist Jaha Dukureh, who's fighting to end female genital mutilation; Chinese fashion designer Guo Pei, who made that memorable yellow gown for Rihanna; and pediatrician Mona Hanna-Attisha, a whistleblower in the Flint, Michigan water crisis, to name a few. Talk about girl power.[/bs-content]

[bs-content]Vera Jourova, the European Union's commissioner for justice, consumers, and gender equality, said it was not right that wealthy citizens can move their money abroad to dodge taxes. "We need to further increase transparency," she said. The comments come in the wake of the massive tax avoidance scandal revealed in the Panama Papers.[/bs-content]
