Why growth and dividend ETFs invest in BlackRock

Funds holding in BlackRock

BlackRock forms part of the portfolio of major sector agnostic-based ETFs—like the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY). It forms 0.25% of the fund.

BlackRock is also part of the iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV), the iShares Russell 1000 Growth (IWF), and the iShares S&P 500 Growth ETF (IVW). The holdings are impacted by the size of the company—compared to the size of the other companies forming part of the fund. The holdings are also impacted by the stocks’ perceived performance in line with the ETFs’ investment strategy.

BlackRock consistently provided capital appreciation over the years. It’s preferred more by ETFs looking for growth stocks. ETFs like the iShares Russell 1000 Growth (IWF) and the iShares S&P 500 Growth ETF (IVW) have lower exposure in the financials—compared to information technology, healthcare, and consumers. They’re holding 5.3% and 7.2% of their fund in financials, respectively.

Preferred among asset managers

BlackRock also forms part of the financial sector-based ETFs like the Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF), the iShares US Financials ETF (IYF), the iShares US Financial Services ETF (IYG), and the ProShares Ultra Financials (UYG). In the sector-based offerings, the ETFs’ holdings in BlackRock tend to increase slightly—compared to sector agnostic-based funds.

Overall, when we look at ETFs in the financial sector, BlackRock is preferred in the asset management category. It’s preferred over State Street (STT), Franklin Resources (BEN), and T. Rowe Price (TROW). The preference is mainly due to the size of the company, its diversified portfolio, and its end markets.

However, banks and financial services firms that have multiple lines of businesses with better market capitalization are preferred over BlackRock. ETFs are preferring more holdings in companies like Goldman Sachs (GS), Citigroup (C), MetLife (MET), Morgan Stanley (MS), and PNC Financial Services (PNC).

Over the last five years the holdings in the BlackRock equity increased among the ETFs that focus on the financial sector in the asset management category.
