Wayne County Junior Fair Board hosts Stock the Trailer food drive

Help our Wayne County Junior Fair Board fight hunger and donate to a contest called Fight the Hunger, Stock the Trailer, sponsored by Farm Credit Mid-America and Rural 1st.

The contest is designed to help bridge the gap of food insecurity in our community.

Junior fair board members will collect nonperishable food items to be donated to food banks in Wayne County. We will weigh the empty trailer before items are donated then again after all the food is loaded. Our junior fair board members wanted to find a way to help the community and decided this would be a great way to do that.

Nonperishable food may be dropped off at the following locations through Sept. 9:

Big Red Barn: 41 W. Main St., Dalton

Farmers Bank: 12 W. Main St., Dalton

Gasser Hardware: 12993 Cleveland Road, Creston

Centerra Country Store: 1009 W. Old Lincoln Way, Wooster

Inside these locations there are boxes that are labeled for donations.

Donations will be taken at Wayne County Fair, too

During the fair, Sept. 10-15 you can drop donations at the Junior Fair Office, or you can drop off items at the stock trailer that will be parked on the fairgrounds. The food will be weighted on the trailer at the end of the fair, and the weight total will be submitted to Farm Credit for a chance to win top prizes.

Our Junior Fair Board is competing with other Ohio Junior Fair Boards. The county collecting the highest weight total will receive $5,000 for first place, $3,500 for second place and $1,500 for third place.

Last year, eight county fairs participated. Because of the contest 18 food banks in Ohio received nonperishable food donations to help people in their communities who struggle with food insecurity. The final weight of food donated last year was 21,091 pounds.
