Wartsila ANCS, a division of the technology group Wartsila, has completed the inaugural pilot installation of its NACOS Connect remote mimics application aboard Sun Princess, the newest flagship vessel of Princess Cruises.

This deployment is expected to bring a “new level of operational oversight” by improving shoreside access to real-time data from the ship’s integrated automation systems.

The pilot project was undertaken as part of an agreement signed in 2021 between Wartsila and Princess Cruises.

The NACOS Platinum automation system, developed by ANCS, is claimed to improve operational efficiency by enabling an onshore technical representative to have a comprehensive, real-time overview of the integrated automation system, simulating the experience of being physically present on board.

This application allows multiple users to simultaneously access and view various automation mimics live from remote locations, thereby bolstering remote support and guidance capabilities.

Wartsila ANCS director Thomas Heldarskard-winnerskjold said: “As pioneers in maritime technology, we are thrilled to partner again with Princess Cruises on this project.

“The NACOS Connect remote mimics application is a welcomed feature for the industry, providing monitoring access and allowing the crew to act on changes more efficiently.”

As the first vessel in Princess Cruises' new Sphere Class, the Sun Princess is claimed to represent a new generation of cruise ships that incorporate advanced technology aimed at promoting sustainability.

The implementation of the NACOS Connect application provides the ship with enhanced shoreside guidance and systems oversight, facilitating ongoing support and analysis, as well as expediting incident resolution, stated Wartsila.

Princess Cruises automation senior manager James Webb said: “Our collaboration with Wartsila ANCS has delivered a system that aligns perfectly with our automation and monitoring objectives by enhancing our ability to remotely support ship operations by providing real-time access to vital systems data.”

Last month, Wartsila signed an agreement to improve the operational reliability of 14 LNG-fuelled container ships for CMA Ships, a part of the French shipping giant CMA CGM.
