With tariffs rocking global markets, many are wondering what legendary investor Warren Buffett thinks about them.
It turns out that he has weighed in on tariffs several times, including in early March 2025, which was the most recent time he discussed them, according to CNBC.
Buffett made the remarks on tariffs to Norah O'Donnell of CBS.
"Over time, they are a tax on goods. I mean, the tooth fairy doesn't pay 'em!" Buffett said then, according to CBS. "And then what? You always have to ask that question in economics. You always say, 'And then what?'"
In that interview, Buffett also said, "Tariffs are actually, we've had a lot of experience with them. They're an act of war, to some degree."
But he also added to CBS, "A majority of any money I manage will always be in the United States. It's the best place! I was lucky to be born here." In that March 2 interview, Buffett also weighed in on other topics, including the death of legendary Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham.
However, there are also false social media reports about Buffett's opinion on tariffs. One comment praising them was debunked by his company Berkshire Hathaway.
"There are reports currently circulating on social media (including Twitter, Facebook and Tik Tok) regarding comments allegedly made by Warren E. Buffett. All such reports are false," that report noted of the more positive remarks, which supposedly had Buffett saying the tariffs were the "best" move.
Buffett has weighed in on tariffs on other occasions.
"If we actually have a trade war, it will be bad for the whole world … everything intersects in the world," Buffett told CNBC. "A world that adjusts to something very close to free trade … more people will live better than in a world with significant tariffs and shifting tariffs over time." But that interview was in 2019.
