They make up to $70,000 a year (working only eight months) and employers cover expenses. But you do have to go thorough training, and successful applicants tend to have three to four years of hobby hiking experience under their belt already.
If you’re afraid of heights, maybe boat captain is more your speed. Small charter boats require a license from the U.S. Coast Guard, which requires a physical and a drug test, an exam, and a year of service on the water. The national average pay for these folks is $40,000.
If both those careers sound either too complicated or too active, how about simply sitting around drinking wine? Resort towns often have fancy restaurants requiring sommeliers to pair wines with food. Some are self-trained, though many take classes at culinary schools and have hospitality degrees. Entry-level sommeliers can pull in $30,000, while the best make over $100,000 a year. Restaurants also need chefs, which make $45,000 a year on average, but often more at prestigious venues.
Photographers aren’t always the best paid, but if your good at it, you can travel to world selling pictures to magazines. Professional tourist portraits are also an option.
And then there’s the more mundane: wherever there’s people, there’s a need for doctors, teachers, electricians and plumbers: why not pick someplace nice to do your job?
