Grocery retailers dominated the National Retail Federation’s Top 50 Global Retailers list, with Walmart taking the top spot.
The top seven companies on the list were grocery retailers, and 20 of the 50 companies listed operate in the grocery industry.
The rankings, developed through a partnership with global market research firm Kantar, are based on both domestic and international retail revenues in 2024.
To make it on the list, companies also must operate as a good-for-consumer resale operation in at least three countries. At least one of the three countries must not be adjacent to the country where the company is headquartered.
The top seven companies on the list, in order of ranking, include:
1. Walmart (USA) with $676 billion in total revenue, 10,692 stores worldwide, and 502 ranking points.
2. Amazon.com (USA) with $393 billion in total revenue, 605 stores worldwide, and 376 ranking points.
3. Schwarz Group (Germany) with $182 billion in total revenue, 14,244 stores worldwide, 279 ranking points.
4. Aldi (Germany) with $155 billion in total revenue, 13,877 stores worldwide, and 252 ranking points.
5. Costco (USA) with $246 billion in total revenue, 890 stores worldwide, and 218 ranking points.
6. Ahold Delhaize (Netherlands) with $99 billion in total revenue, 8,111 stores worldwide, and 164 ranking points.
7. Carrefour (France) with $98 billion in total revenue, 14,961 stores worldwide, and 142 ranking points.
Walgreens Boots Alliance also made the list, coming in at No. 11. The pharmacy chain reported $124 billion in total company revenue in 2024, 12,134 stores and 82 ranking points.
Other companies in the grocery industry that appeared on the list include: Rewe (12), Jeronimo Martins (17), Tesco (20), Aeon (21), Auchan (23), Coop Schweiz (24), Intermarche (26), Aspiag (30), Leclerc (31), Cencosud (37), Migros (45), and Lulu Group (50).
