Uber Technologies has partnered with Nvidia to accelerate the development of autonomous vehicles (AV) using advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

The collaboration will leverage Nvidia's Cosmos and DGX Cloud platforms, both aimed at transforming physical AI development.

Commenting on the alliance, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said: “Generative AI will power the future of mobility, requiring both rich data and very powerful compute.

“By working with Nvidia, we are confident that we can help supercharge the timeline for safe and scalable autonomous driving solutions for the industry.”

Nvidia Cosmos is a platform that includes generative world foundation models, tokenisers, and tools tailored for data processing and model customisation.

It is specifically designed to aid the development of physical AI systems such as robots and self-driving cars.

The DGX Cloud, on the other hand, offers a fully managed AI platform that comes preconfigured with Nvidia's latest architecture and software.

Its open design ensures that machine learning projects can be easily transferred and scaled across different cloud environments.

Nvidia vice president of automotive Norm Marks said: “Uber is one of the first mobility leaders to embrace these platforms to accelerate the development and deployment of physical AI systems such as AVs.

“We’re excited to collaborate with Uber to help empower the AV ecosystem with Cosmos and DGX Cloud.”

In a recent press statement, Nvidia said that, alongside Uber, other transportation companies such as Waabi, Wayve, and Foretellix will leverage Cosmos to develop physical AI for autonomous vehicles (AVs).

Waabi, a company pioneering generative AI for the physical world, plans to use Cosmos to search for and curate video data essential for AV software development and simulation.

Wayve, which focuses on building AI foundation models for autonomous driving, is exploring Cosmos as a tool to identify edge and corner case driving scenarios critical for safety testing and validation.

Foretellix, a provider of AV toolchains, will combine Cosmos with NVIDIA's Omniverse Sensor RTX APIs to assess and generate high-fidelity testing scenarios and training data at scale.

In December 2024, Uber and WeRide launched an autonomous ride-hailing service in Abu Dhabi, marking the first availability of autonomous vehicles on the Uber platform outside the United States.

This also represents the largest commercial robotaxi service outside the US and China.
