In the last trading session, U.S. stocks built upon the gains made on Tuesday, thanks to the rally in the energy sector following increase in crude oil prices. Among the top ETFs, investors saw SPY gain 0.45%, DIA move higher 0.22% and QQQ rise 0.04% on the day.
Two more specialized ETFs are worth noting as both saw trading volume that was far outside of normal. In fact, both these funds experienced volume levels that were more than double their average for the most recent trading session. This could make these ETFs the ones to watch out for in the days ahead to see if this trend of extra-interest continues:
ITOT: Volume 3.59 times average
This total U.S. market ETF was under the microscope yesterday as more than 1.1 million shares moved hands compared with an average of roughly 310,000 shares. We also saw some price movement as ITOT gained 0.6% in the last session.
The movement can largely be blamed on risk-on trade sentiment boosted by recovering fundamentals that can have a big impact on the U.S. stocks like what we find in this ETF’s portfolio. For the past one-month period, ITOT was up nearly 3%.
UST: Volume 2.88 times average
This leveraged long-term government bond ETF was in focus yesterday as nearly 88,000 shares moved hands compared to an average of roughly 30,000 shares. We also saw some price movement as UST lost nearly 0.4% yesterday.
The move yesterday was largely the result of treasury yields rising and, with leveraged factor tacked on UST, investors can see huge losses in a short period of time. Treasury yields rose owing to a renewed belief that the Fed will raise interest rates later this year after a slew of strong economic data being reported recently. For the past one-month period, UST was up 1.3%.
