WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwired - Aug 26, 2013) - U.S.English Chairman Mauro E. Mujica today released the following statement in response to the introduction of a bill to make English the official language of Wisconsin.

AB 340, introduced by Rep. Andre Jacque, includes exceptions allowing for the use of foreign languages in instances of public health and safety, trade and commerce, the instruction of foreign languages and more.

"Wisconsin is one of just 19 states that do not recognize English as the official language," Mujica said. "I commend Rep. Jacque for his leadership on this important legislation. With 124 languages spoken in the Badger State, making English the official language demonstrates the unifying force of English as our common language. Doing so does not limit an individual's freedom to speak a language of his or her choosing -- rather, it ensures consistency in government communications, sending the message that learning English is not optional."
