U.S. awards $986M to improve airport infrastructure

WASHINGTON, Sept 23 (Reuters) - The U.S. Transportation Department is awarding nearly $1 billion in grants to improve more than 350 U.S. airports, including almost $45 million to rebuild runways and taxiways at New York City-area airports.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said Monday the department is awarding $29 million to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport to reconstruct a runway and widen it from 150 to 200 feet, $6.4 million to rehabilitate two runways and Taxiway B at LaGuardia Airport and $8.3 million to rehabilitate a runway and two taxiways at Newark Liberty International Airport in northern New Jersey.
