Japan’s leading automaker Toyota Motor Corporation has suspended operations on three production lines at two vehicle assembly plants in Aichi Prefecture since Monday, according to local reports citing a company official.
The stoppages are understood to be due to an explosion and a subsequent fire last week at a plant belonging to Chuo Spring Company Ltd, an affiliated supplier of suspension parts, injuring two employees. The explosion is reported to have occurred at a dust collector at the plant.
The vehicle assembly plants affected by the stoppages include the Takaoka plant in Toyota City, which makes the RAV4 and the Harrier SUVs, and Toyota Industries' Nagakusa plant in Obu, which produces the RAV4 SUV. The automaker had yet to reveal how long production the suspension will last.
According to local reports, the explosion last Thursday forced Chuo Spring to halt production at two suspension spring production lines at its Fujioka plant in Toyota, with no news so far on when operations will restart.
This is the second such accident in two years at Chuo Spring, after an explosion and a fire at one of the company’s facilities in October 2023 forced Toyota to halt production on 13 lines at eight domestic vehicle assembly plants.
