We think intelligent long term investing is the way to go. But along the way some stocks are going to perform badly. For example the Huadian Fuxin Energy Corporation Limited (HKG:816) share price dropped 66% over five years. That's not a lot of fun for true believers. We also note that the stock has performed poorly over the last year, with the share price down 27%. The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 16% in the last three months. However, one could argue that the price has been influenced by the general market, which is down 7.1% in the same timeframe.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

While the share price declined over five years, Huadian Fuxin Energy actually managed to increase EPS by an average of 2.3% per year. So it doesn't seem like EPS is a great guide to understanding how the market is valuing the stock. Alternatively, growth expectations may have been unreasonable in the past. Based on these numbers, we'd venture that the market may have been over-optimistic about forecast growth, half a decade ago. Having said that, we might get a better idea of what's going on with the stock by looking at other metrics.

The steady dividend doesn't really explain why the share price is down. While it's not completely obvious why the share price is down, a closer look at the company's history might help explain it.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of Huadian Fuxin Energy, it has a TSR of -61% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
