Thomasville OKs incentives request

THOMASVILLE — A potential major economic development investment is a step closer to reality following a Monday vote by Thomasville leaders.

The City Council approved an incentives request for “Project Atlantis B,” which involves an unnamed company considering a $94 million investment in the city.

The vote authorizes $874,200 in incentives for the project if it moves forward and meets several conditions.

City Clerk Wendy Martin said no further details about the project, such as the company’s name and the site under consideration, were revealed at Monday’s public hearing.

She said the city is awaiting an announcement about the project from the office of Gov. Roy Cooper.

The Davidson County Board of Commissioners is also expected to consider an incentives package for the project, she said.

According to the city, the project would create 44 full-time jobs in Thomasville by the end of 2026.

The incentives would be in the form of cash grants paid over three years, subject to the company meeting terms of a contract for investment in plant, machinery and equipment, as well as benchmarks for jobs and wages.

The new jobs would pay hourly wages in excess of the Davidson County average.
