Ahead of the meeting, on the company's earnings call following the release of its first-quarter results, Musk suggested that the all-electric crossover would be made available in late 2019 or 2020. The Model Y was supposed to further the company's goal of hitting its target of 1 million vehicle per year in 2020.

Musk also suggested on the call that the new platform for the Model Y vehicle might do away with the 12-battery architecture. This would obviate the lead-acid battery and instead rely on an altogether different way of powering the in-car electronics.

Tesla might release the design at least a year before the launch so that it can open reservations, according to Electrek.
